CATHOLIC LAWYERS URGED TO UPHOLD RIGHTS AND NEEDS OF CATHOLIC COMMUNITY
|
Kuala Lumpur : Catholic lawyers can play a vital role in catering to and upholding the rights and needs of the Catholic community. This was highlighted by Archbishop Murphy Pakiam during a dialogue session with several members of the Catholic Lawyers Society (CLS) Kuala Lumpur recently. Also present at the meeting was the CLS's ecelesiastical assistant, Fr. O.C. Lim, SJ. The archbishop touched on the need for the CLS to hold more seminars
and dialogue sessions to highlight the more pressing and rampant issues faced by the Catholic community in the wider context of our society. Some of the pressing issues mentioned by the archbishop included the death penalty, domestic violence, homosexual orientation and problems faced by migrant workers. Archbishop Pakiam urged the lawyers to deepen their spiritual faith so as to face the onslaught of the world around them. He emphasised on the
specific need for them to deepen their faith as Catholic lawyers through the medium of seminars to spread this message of faith to other segments of the Catholic community. CSL will be requesting Fr. Phillip Muthu to conduct lessons on Canon Law for its members. Special mention was also made on the need for a marriage reconciliation body to enable couples to go through a process of reconciliation before seeking a divorce. The CSL also discussed with the Archbishop, the need to incorporate certain amendments to their constitution to include and form a wider group of lawyers from the other states in Malaysia. (Herald)

PIHD CALLS FOR INVOLVEMENT OF WHOLE PARISH COMMUNITY
|
Kuala Lumpur : The first Archdiocesan Parish Integral Human Development (PIHD) session was initiated at the Church of St Joseph. A total of 30 participants attended the session which was conducted by a team from the National Office for Human Development (NOHD). According to Parish Priest Fr. Ferdinand Magimay,
he is planning to introduce the Ministry of the Poor through PIHD, to reach out to all the people in the neighbourhood of a BEC community who are in need of a voice or a hand to meet their needs. "People today have become so self-contained and self-centred preferring to mind their own business – their family needs,
that they have forgotten the command, Love thy neighbour as thy self. With the BECs taking a new dimension of New Way of Being Church, the laity have an opportunity to reach out, to witness in action the love of Christ which we commune through the Eucharist. It is communion of communities. Fr. Mitchel Anthony who is the newly appointed priest delegate for the Office of Human Development and his team members gave a thought-provoking presentation that captivated the participants for about two hours. Explaining further, Fr Mitchel quoted The Decree on the Church's Missionary Activity which affirms that: The Church is not truly established and does not fully live nor a perfect sign of Christ unless there is genuine laity existing and working alongside the hierarchy, for the gospel cannot become deeply rooted in the mentality, life and work of the people without the active presence of the laity (Ad Gentes 2 1 A). HONOURING ST JOSEPH, THE PATRON OF WORKERS
|
Kuala Lumpur : "The Church of St Joseph was built particularly for the workers - the poor who lived around Sentul. Thus, St Joseph, the worker is fittingly the patron saint of this church," said parish priest Fr. Ferdinand Magimay. Fr. Ferdinand, who was pleased with the recently concluded parish feast day celebrations,
was giving a brief history of the parish. He explained that the Church of St Joseph, which is one of the oldest churches in the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur was built for the workers of the then Malayan Railways and also for those who lived in Sentul. "Incidentally, St Joseph is the only saint who has two feast days in his honour -
the other being the feast of St Joseph, the Husband of Mary which falls on March 19," he added. More than 2000 people attended the feast day celebration which commenced with a triduum. The youths of the parish also took an active role during the celebration by staging a mime play, The Unsung Saint. Forty youths including stage crew, took part in the play. They had spent about three months preparing for the presentation with fasting and prayer. The play left deep impressions on the audience and indelible marks in the minds of the youth who participated in the presentation. The rousing applause from the audience at the end of the presentation was proof enough to say that the job was well done. (Herald)

HELPING ALTAR SERVES GAIN A SENSE OF CHURCH
|
Seremban : A Formation and Vocation Camp is being organised for the altar servers of the Negeri Sembilan district at College General in Penang. A total of 51 altar servers are expected to attend the camp, which will be held
during the school holidays from June 1 to 4. According to Fr. Leonard John who conceptualised the outing, this camp is a very positive move for altar servers whose role in the Church puts them close to the priest and his priestly
functions in the sanctuary. "The trip to the seminary will serve as an insight into the 'making of a priest' and the spirituality that surrounds the formation to priesthood," said Fr. Leonard who is the parish priest of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Port Dickson and also a lecturer at College General.. Fr. Michael Chua, who has been given the overall responsibility of managing the visit programme said, “ The main objective is to give the altar servers a sense of Church and to be reasonably immersed in the celebration of the Eucharist”. Resident seminarians are expected to be on hand to spend time with the young visitors as well as to facilitate sessions and respond to questions. "Follow-up activities will be held when the youths return to their parishes. Some of the activities will include on-going spiritual formation to help nurture their new experience," added Fr. Chua. HOLY FAMILY PARISH-LEVEL GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS
|
Kajang : Following the official launching of the Golden Jubilee celebrations for the Archdiocese
of Kuala Lumpur on May 3, the Church of the Holy Family held its launching at parish level during
the Eucharistic celebration on May 9. After the thanksgiving hymn, parish priest, Fr. Leo Chang presented a brief introduction of the Jubilee Prayer. This was followed by a procession of 13 zone leaders of the parish from the entrance of the church to the altar. Each leader carried a pictorial banner depicting the words Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs). The procession signified unity and love amongst the people and the significance of community and togetherness. It was a simple sign of how the various BECs unite to form a zone and how these zones come together to form a Church, thus strengthening the call to follow the New Way of Being Church. Before the final blessing, Fr. Chang led the congregation in reciting the Jubilee Prayer. He reminded the parishioners to recite the prayer slowly and prayerfully so as to appreciate each word and its significance to each one. After the prayer, Fr.
